The Sauble River winds its way through Tara offering glimpses of grassy riverbanks, overhanging trees and gentle eddies.  Named after the ancient seat of Irish kings in the County of Meath, Ireland, Tara is surrounded by the rich farmland of the municipality of Arran-Elderslie.  

Tara was incorporated as a village in 1881, the year that the railroad arrived.  In its heyday, this friendly community was the focus for a thriving agricultural countryside with its mills, potash factory, blacksmiths, creamery, cheese factory and a pottery.

Then, five disastrous fires swept the vibrant village.  The Great Fire of 1925 nearly wiped out Main Street – but Tara rose from the ashes becoming today a tranquil place of stately churches and homes.  Located halfway between Owen Sound and Southampton, Tara is a country community well worth tarrying in for awhile.

Believe It or Not

Every small community has its claim to fame, its 15 minutes of front-page headlines.  Tara’s came early in its history when W. A. Gerolamy opened a foundry and agricultural implement factory in 1857.  Mr. Gerolamy’s fanning mills were famous.  Entered in industrial shows at world’s fairs, they took first place in Sydney, Philadelphia, Paris, Melbourne, and Chicago.
