Family Activities on Family Day 2011

family day spending timeIn my humble opinion, everyday is family day. Although having a long weekend in February is more then welcomed. How cool is our government to create a holiday all in the name of a three day weekend dedicated to families?   I haven't bothered to look up what it means specifically, instead I answer it with actions of quality time with the people I love and care about.

While everything during a Bruce County winter it based on the weather, there are a myriad of things that you and your family can do to make the most of this winter.

February 19-20, 2011: Sparkle in the Park

ontario provincial parkMacGregor Provincial Park, just outside the Lake Huron Shoreline town of Port Elgin, has some interesting activities for you get into touch with nature. On the Saturday, starting at 8pm, an Owl Prowl will take place. Matt, a park naturalist, will be meeting participants at the Visitor Centre to get things going.

He will help you identify those haunting sounds that sing in the night. You might be surprised. Sunday evening brings a candlelit skate from 8-9:30 pm. Experience the park in a whole new way. Don’t have a candle? No problem. The park will provide candles. Just a reminder that putting sand or salt in your candle holder can damage the skating surface. Hot chocolate will be made available to keep you warm on this chilly night.

Not in the mood for skating. Not to worry. MacGregors pristine snowshoe and crosscountry ski trails are groomed regularly. Their status is updated daily in their website.

February 21, 2011: Family Day Sleigh Rides & Sleddinghorse sleigh rides

Mozy on over to Dual Acres, in Shallow Lake, for a fun filled day of horse drawn sleigh rides and good ole fashioned tobogganing. Experience this wonderful winter wonderland, and warm up in ‘the shack’ with a free cup of yummy hot cocoa!

There a few things that you will need to bring to maximize you day;

    •    toboggans for you and your family
    •    snacks and hot dogs (for cooking on a wood stove)
    •    a crunchy carrot to feed Buckwheat the pony

Cost for this event is $8 for adult and $5 for children 10 and under. Make sure you R.S.V.P (519-935-3156) to ensure your spot.

February 21, 2011: FREE Family Heritage Day family heritage day southampton

This FREE event is taking place at the Bruce County Museum in the town of Southampton, Ontario. Take a step back in time and try your hand at weaving, spinning, rug hooking and even more fun activities.  Take a trip around Fairy Lake with snowshoes as it is a beautiful hike every season. Amidst this day, children's entertainer, Dickie Bird, will be performing from 11:30 am - 2:30 pm. If you work up an appetite, chili and hot drinks are available at the lunch counter from 11am - 2pm.

With all of these fabulous choices it’s hard to pick one. I, for one, am looking forward to gliding along MacGregors unique skating path with my wee family. Trees, ice and snow. Doesn’t get much more Canadian then that.  I would even recommend simple fun things like going 5 pin bowling with the kids, suit up for tobagganing,  go to movies or rent kids favorite at the local movie store even if it is a mushy romantic one for you and the lady.  Let us know in the comments below what activities you have planned for this 2011 Family Day.

Happy Family to all!
