I can see it in the not to far off distance, Christmas parades across Bruce County!  There is nothing quite like a parade, especially when the snow is falling, the bands playing Christmas tunes, the floats rolling by, and then – there he is – Santa Claus!

Christmas parades are actually the ancestor of late Medieval and Renaissance revivals of Roman Triumphs that had music and banners, wagons filled with the spoils of war.  Today, it is Santa Claus, the descendent of Saint Nicholas, who makes his triumphal entry in Christmas Parades – just as he has done in Canada since 1905.  It was in that year that the Toronto Santa Claus Parade got under way.  Sponsored by Eaton’s Department Store, it is the longest running parade of its type in Canada.  But it doesn’t hold a patch on Peoria, Illinois, home to the oldest Christmas Parade in the world. 

Locally across Bruce County the first parade begins on a Saturaday down main street in Goderisch on November 19th followed by Paisley the following Friday, Nov 25th.  On Saturday, November 26th, Santa Claus will be in his sleigh, making his way through the streets of Listowell, Port Elgin, and Walkerton with Ripley on the Sunday 27th.  The following week, on Saturday, December 2nd and 3rd, it’s time for Kincardine and Southampton to celebrate the coming of the festive season.  And then on Sunday, let’s head to Wiarton for their annual holiday ramble through town.

In the midst of communities getting ready, there are also many Christmas concerts, craft shows and Horse drawn wagon rides.   So get your warmest clothes on, grab the kids and take up your station in Walkerton or Wiarton – and cheer on this year’s Christmas Parade.
